Test: Bangladesh in comfortable position after opening day against Afghanistan

Dhaka, June 14: Southpaw Nazmul Hossain Shanto's century propelled Bangladesh to a comfortable position against Afghanistan on the first day of the one off Test match. By virtue of his ton, the hosts scored 362 runs for the loss of five wickets in 79 overs.

Coming to bat in the number three position, Shanto scored 146 runs in 175 balls. Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy scored 76 runs. Together they put on a partnership of 212 runs.

Bangladesh lost the toss and was sent to bat first by the visiting Afghanistan side. Bangladesh lost their first wicket in the second over as Zakir Hasan was sent back to the pavillion. Hijat mashud, who made his debut for Afghanistan, accounted for the wicket.

Shanto played a breezy knock and reached his half century in the first session itself.

Spinner Rahmat Shah broke the partnership, by sending back Joy.

In the last session, the hosts lost four wickets and was in a spot of bother. However, Mushfiquer Rahim and Mehidy Hasan Miraj stemmed the flow of wickets and stitched together a partnership of 72 runs in 97 balls.

Miraj is unbeaten on 43 runs, while his partner will start his innings at 41 when play resumes on Thursday.
