Violation of code of conduct: Shakib expresses regret

Dhaka, Dec 2: Cricketer Shakib Al Hasan expressed regret after appearing in the District and Sessions Judge's court to respond to the violation of election code of conduct given by the Election Inquiry Committee of Magura on Thursday.

At 3.45 pm, he appeared in the private room of the committee chief Magura's Joint District and Sessions Judge Satyabrata Shikder and gave a written reply.

In this regard, Sajedur Rahman Sangram, the lawyer of Shakib Al Hasan, said, "On November 29, Sakib Al Hasan came to Magura. Then his fans and eager crowd gathered in Kamarkhali area. There, devotees and general public greeted him with flowers. There was no political agenda. Nor did he call anyone from the party. We have mentioned these things in reply to the notice. We will be careful about these things in future. I will obey the law."

Thursday's notice read, "You Shakib Al Hasan was coming to Magura from Dhaka on November 29 after announcing party nomination as Awami League nominated MP candidate from Magura-1 constituency. At that time, he entered Magura town with a convoy from Kamarkhali area. It creates obstacles in the way of people's movement. Which has been publicized and published in the media. By this you have violated the provisions of Sections 6 (d), 8 (a), 10 (a) and 12 of the Rules of Conduct of Political Parties and Candidates in Parliamentary Elections-2008. You are requested to appear in person at this office at 3 pm on Friday, December 1, and give a written reply as to why legal action will not be taken against you for violating the election code of conduct."

Shakib Al Hasan said to the reporters after leaving Magura judge court, "When I came to Magura from Dhaka on the 29th, the townspeople along with my fans greeted me. This is an unexpected event. I am very sorry for this incident. I have a lot of respect for the electoral law. But this is the first and new election. I will keep an eye so that such incidents do not happen in the future."
