Gaibandha-5 by-election: EC taking action against 133 officials including returning officers

Dhaka, December 2: Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal said that the Election Commission (EC) has recommended action against 133 election officials including returning officers involved in irregularities in the Gaibandha-5 seat by-election. Others are presiding officers of 125 centres, additional deputy commissioner (general), one executive officer and five police officers. Besides, the polling agents of 145 polling centers that had irregularities will not be able to perform their duty in any future elections.

There will be fair elections under Election Commission: Obaidul Quader

Dhaka, November 30: General Secretary of Awami League Obaidul Quader said that according to the constitution of the country and the way elections are conducted in other countries of the world, the general elections will be fair in Bangladesh.

EC scrutinizing registration application

Dhaka, November 23: The parties applying for registration to the Election Commission are being scrutinized whether they have complied with the conditions or not. According to the registration rules, at least nine types of information must be filled in the application, along with the submission of 10 types of documents. EC will register the team only then.

Recounting of EVM results: EC did not locate three audit cards

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Nov 7: The Election Commission (EC) has not received the whereabouts of three audit cards ordered to recount the results of the general councilor post of a ward of Dhaka North City Corporation. As a result, the EC recalculated the results given by the presiding officer after the voting at that time. It was not possible to match the correct result of the vote with the result of the presiding officer as the audit card was not available. This is the first EC vote count ordered by the court.

Officials involved in irregularities in Gaibandha by-election: Investigators

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Oct 28: The investigation committee of the Election Commission (EC) has found the involvement of several presiding officers including an upazila executive officer in the irregularities of Gaibandha-5 by-election. Also, the involvement of several polling agents in the irregularities has come up in the investigation report. Investigation officers have also found some responsible persons who are not voters or citizens of Gaibandha-5 constituency.

Jamaat applies for registration under a different name

However, it has been alleged that the group is formed by the leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, registration of which has been cancelled by the High Court.

Alamgir said, "I would have used EVMs in 300 seats if I could. Don't have money (to buy EVMs). And I can't complete the training (of using EVM). If I came to the post two years ago, I would have conducted the elections in EVMs in 300 seats."
