Dhaka, August 18: After a long hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic, 36 pairs of intercity trains have started operating from August 11. On Thursday (August 19), 12 more pairs of intercity and 24 pairs of commuter, local and DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Units) trains will run.

The information was revealed in a circular signed by Shariful Alam, senior information officer of the railway ministry, on Tuesday (August 17).

According to the notification, 36 pairs of intercity trains have been launched since August 11 after the lockdown was relaxed. Another 12 pairs of intercity trains will start operating from next Thursday. Twenty-four pairs of commuter, local and DEMU trains will be added to that.

From 11 August, 36 pairs of intercity and 19 pairs of mail-commuter trains started operating on a limited scale following the hygiene rules. At that time, railway sources said, tickets for each train would be sold online. Tickets for non-computerized stations have to be purchased from that station counter.
