Coronavirus: Malaysia bans Bangladeshi travellers

Dhaka, May 6: Malaysia has imposed a travel ban on citizens of four South Asian countries, including Bangladesh, citing the current state of the coronavirus pandemic. Malaysian media quoted Minister Ismail Sabri Yakub as saying on Wednesday that the ban has been imposed.

According to the Malaysia Star and the New Straits Times, passengers from Bangladesh as well as Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Nepal have been placed on the travel ban. However, Minister Yakub did not specify when the ban would take effect.

Earlier, Malaysia had also banned the entry of Indians coronavirus-infected India.

The Star quoted Ismail Sabri as saying that the ban would apply to long-term travel passers-by in these countries, those traveling for commercial purposes and those traveling for other purposes.

Diplomatic and government passport holders will be exempted from the ban. However, in the case of travel, they also have to abide by the restrictions of the pandemic.

According to media reports, Malaysian nationals will be able to return from countries facing sanctions. However, they will have to stay in the mandatory quarantine for 14 days after returning to their country.
