Dhaka, February 25: Rail communication is being introduced between Jalpaiguri (NJP) of India and Dhaka. This rail service will be launched from March 26. This train will run two days a week. The train will leave NJP on Monday and Thursday and will leave Dhaka Cantonment Station on Tuesday and Friday.

The train will reach the destination in 9 hours non-stop journey. It will run on a diesel engine with 10 air-conditioned coaches.

The distance from Jalpaiguri to Dhaka is 530 kms. Of this, 446 kms is in Bangladesh. The initiative to launch the railway was taken at a virtual meeting of the Prime Ministers of the two countries last December.

The final decision to launch the train was taken at a meeting of officials of the two countries on Wednesday (February 25). The meeting was chaired by Md. Shahidul Islam, Manager, Pakshi Railway Division on behalf of Bangladesh and Rabindra Kumar Verma, Manager, Katihar Division on behalf of India.

After the meeting, Verma told the Indian media, "The rail service is being launched mainly with the tourism industry in mind." In the first phase, the train will run two days a week. The train will leave NJP on March 26 at 2 pm. The Prime Ministers of the two countries will inaugurate it virtually.

Earlier, two rail services were launched between the two countries. The Maitri Express was launched on April 14, 2008. Bondhan Express was launched on November 9, 2017. This new train will be the third train between the two countries.

Besides, the process of starting train service from Haldibari in India to Chilahati in Bangladesh is underway.
