Dhaka-Siliguri passenger trains from March 26
Dhaka, December 8: Passenger trains from Dhaka to India's Siliguri will run from March 26. Indian High Commissioner Vikram Kumar Doraiswami made the remarks during a meeting with Railway Minister Md. Nurul Islam Sujan.
The Prime Ministers of Bangladesh and India will inaugurate of a new rail link between Chilahati in Bangladesh and Haldibari in India via video conference on 17 December. A detailed discussion was carried out by Doraiswami and Nurul Islam Sujon during their meeting
It was informed at this time that an empty wagon will go to Haldibari from Chilahati on the occasion of the inauguration. Later freight trains will run on this route. The Railway Minister requested the High Commissioner to implement the plan to run a new Dhaka-Siliguri trains.
At this time, all the ongoing and future projects under the Indian Financing LOC in Bangladesh were discussed. In particular, construction of Khulna-Mongla railway line, construction of ICD at Ishwardi, construction of new Bogra-Sirajganj railway line, construction of new railway line from Jessore to Satkhira, establishment of a modern factory at Syedpur came up for discussion.
Apart from this, the construction of an Inland Container Depot (ICD) at Sirajganj was discussed in detail and both the parties gave their views on its benefits.
The Railway Minister said a new train will be run from Dhaka to Cox's Bazar by the end of 2022. He said it is not possible to develop railways without double lines, so initiatives have been taken to upgrade important lines across the country to double lines.
