Bangladesh, Saudi Arabia agree to sign agreement to protect environment

Nairobi, Feb 29: Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia will sign a memorandum of understanding to enhance mutual cooperation in protecting environment and wildlife and combating climate change.

Environment, Forest and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury took this decision in a bilateral meeting with Saudi Arabia's Minister of State for Environment, Climate and Agriculture Dr. Osama Ibrahim Faqeeha on the sidelines of the ongoing UN Environment Conference in Nairobi, Kenya. Recognizing mutual commitment to environmental protection, both countries agreed to enhance cooperation by signing a memorandum of understanding.

The MoU will be signed to strengthen cooperation in important areas such as environment protection, wildlife conservation, combating climate change and pollution control. During the meeting, State Minister Faqeeha formally invited Environment Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury to participate in the United Nations Convention on Desertification to be held in December 2024.

He said that this invitation testifies to the growing cooperation between Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia in tackling global environmental challenges.

In the discussion, they discussed various issues including knowledge exchange programmes, agriculture, mangrove conservation, waste management, smart city development and strategies to combat land degradation. They emphasized the need for joint determination of Bangladesh and Saudi Arabia for innovative solutions to environmental problems.

Saber Chowdhury reiterated Bangladesh's commitment to promote environmental sustainability locally and internationally. In another programme, the Environment Minister addressed a high-level segment on Strengthening the Science Policy Interface for Implementation of Environmental Commitments.

He shed light on the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan, Delta Plan, National Adaptation Plan prepared by Bangladesh Government to deal with climate.
