Cape Town, February 27: An expatriate Bangladeshi was shot dead by some unidentified miscreants in South Africa late on Sunday.

The incident reportedly took place at around 1 am in Bloemfontein, Free State province of the country.

According to reports, the deceased has been identified as Manik Azam Shajal (43), a resident of Feni district's Daganbhuiyan upazila.

Quoting family members of the deceased, the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Daganbhuiyan police station Hasan Imam said that Sajal was living in South Africa for over 18 years. He was the former general secretary of the Bangladeshi community of the area.

The OC further said that Sajal had a conflict with a local shopkeeper. However,  the matter was reportedly settled by the people of the community.

"Although it was agreed that Sajal would pay Tk 5 lakh to the shopkeeper, he fell short by Tk 10,000," the OC added.

Sajal's family alleged that the expatriate had been killed by the shopkeeper for money.
