London, April 9: A British court has sentenced Kochi Selamaz (36) to life in prison for the murder of British-Bangladeshi school-teacher Sabina Nessa (26).

The verdict was announced by London's Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) on Friday (April 8).

The verdict said that the convicted person will be in prison at least 36 years. He killed Sabina Nessa in a park in the Kidbrook area of south-east London in September last year. The deceased, Sabina Nessa, was a primary school teacher in Lyusham, south-east London.

It is learned that Kochi Selamaz (36) is a delivery driver by profession. He killed Sabina Nessa in a park in the Kidbrook area of south-east London in September last year.

Sabina Nessa's ancestral home is in Daorai village in Jagannathpur upazila of Sunamganj, Bangladesh. At around 8:30 pm on September 17 last year, Sabina was attacked while visiting a friend in Paglar Square, five minutes away from her home. Her body was found the next day in a park in the nearby Kidbrook area.

CCTV footage of the incident showed Kochi Selamaz hitting Sabina Nessa in the head before she lost consciousness. When Nessa fainted, he tried to move her to another place. He then strangled Sabina Nessa.

Kochi Selamaz worked in a garage in Eastbourne, East Sussex. He went to London on September 17 last year. He confessed to the court that he felt resentment towards women after getting divorced from his wife.

Kochi Selamaz was arrested within days of Sabina Nessa's murder. The court convicted him last February. He refused to appear in court on the day the verdict was announced. The court pronounced the verdict in his absence.

Judge Sweeney described the attack as "barbaric" and said it was "sexually motivated". The judge said Sabina Nessa was a completely innocent woman. She was the victim of a horrific murder for which the accused is solely responsible.
