New Zealand reports first Covid-19 death in three months

The deceased has been identified as a man in his 50s and is the youngest person to have died in New Zealand from Covid-19.

Acknowledging the death, a health ministry statement read, "The man in his 50s was part of the August Auckland cluster and died earlier today at Middlemore Hospital."

Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield said more deaths are possible.

"I acknowledge the anxiety New Zealanders may be feeling about today's news, both in the wider community and also for the family and whanau (relatives) grieving over this death," Bloomfield said.

"Our thoughts are with his family and community at this time of loss and grief," he added.

In August New Zealand reported the first Covid-19 positive case, bringing an end to a 102-day coronavirus free period in the country.

The country has reported 1,764 Covid-19 cases so far with 22 deaths.

Among the affected, 1,764 patients have recovered, according to www.worldometers.info.

On Friday, the country reported five new coronavirus cases.

The restrictions imposed will remain in place till at least mid-September, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said.

"The best economic response remains a strong health response. If we get it right we will ultimately shake off restrictions faster and lessen the risk of bouncing around," Ardern told reporters.

Auckland, the worst affected city, has imposed a 2.5 alert level, which limits a gathering of no more than 10 people.
