Spain: 77 people killed in train crash

Santiago de Compostela, July 25: At least 77 people were killed when a high-speed train derailed near Santiago de Compostela city in Spain on Wednesday, reports said on Thursday.

 More than 100 others were injured as eight carriages of the train came off the tracks at around 18:41 GMT.

The train was going from Madrid city to Ferrol city when the mishap occured.

The mishap reportedly occurred as the train was travelling at more than twice the speed limit around a curve.

Rescue operation is still going on as rescuers struggled to pull victims out of the wreckage.

Spain\'s Renfe railroad service said 218 passengers were travelling in the train.

"The High Court of Galicia Xustiza has stated that, of the 77 confirmed victims, 73 have been located on the site of the tragedy, while four have died in hospitals to which they had been transferred," local newspaper La Voz de Galicia said
