New York, May 28: Two Bangladeshi peacekeepers have been honoured posthumous with the prestigious UN medal, 'Dag Hammarskjold', for their supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.

Ambassador Rabab Fatima, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the United Nations, received the medal on behalf of Bangladesh from the UN Secretary General on Thursday. The Bangladesh Permanent Mission will make arrangements to deliver these medals to the families of the killed Bangladeshi peacekeepers on duty.

At the award ceremony, Rabab Fatima said, "The sacrifices of the peacekeepers strengthen our resolve to work only for peace."

The United Nations honours peacekeepers posthumously with 'Dag Hammarskjold' for making their supreme sacrifice while on duty on International Peacekeeping Day at the UN headquarters.

Two Bangladeshi peacekeepers, Major AKM Mahmudul Hasan and Lance Corporal Md. Rabiul Mollah, who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, were honoured with the medal. Major AKM Mahmudul Hassan was killed while on duty at the MINUSCA mission in the Central African Republic and Lance Corporal Md. Rabiul Mollah was killed at the UNMIS mission in South Sudan in the line of duty.

On this year's International Day of Peacekeepers, 117 peacekeepers from 42 countries who sacrificed their lives in UN peacekeeping missions were awarded the 'Dag Hammarskjold' medal for their supreme sacrifice in world peacekeeping. At a ceremony held at the UN Headquarters, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres handed over the medals to the Permanent Representatives of 42 countries, including Bangladesh.

On the occasion of the day, Ambassador Fatima signed the condolence book kept at the UN headquarters. In her condolence message, she mentioned that Bangladesh has lost many of its brave children in fulfilling its sacred duty for world peace.

She paid deep respects to all the heroic peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives for the cause of peace and extended their deepest condolences to their families for this irreparable loss.

After the award ceremony, Ambassador Fatima laid a wreath at the Peacekeepers Memorial Site on the North Lawn of the United Nations headquarters in honour of all the peacekeepers who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
