Dhaka, June 15: The 'Culture of Peace' resolution raised by Bangladesh in the UN General Assembly was unanimously accepted. Bangladesh Permanent Representative and Ambassador Mohammad Abdul Muhith presented the resolution on behalf of Bangladesh at the UN Headquarters in New York on Wednesday (June 14) local time.

Highlighting the continued relevance of a culture of peace in the context of various global challenges, Ambassador Muhith, while presenting the proposal, said, 'The need to build a culture of peace through dialogue and harmony to overcome violence and conflict is now more urgent than ever.

The resolution was adopted for the first time in the United Nations General Assembly on September 13, 1999 during the first government of Sheikh Hasina. Since then, every year Bangladesh has presented the 'Culture of Peace' resolution to the UN General Assembly and organized a high-level forum. It highlights the transformative role of a culture of peace in accelerating world peace-building efforts by ensuring justice, equity and inclusive societies.

This year's resolution highlights the central role of the United Nations in addressing various global risks and challenges and the collective efforts of all member states and stakeholders. It emphasizes strengthening preventive diplomacy and dialogue at all levels. Reiterating the leading role of women in conflict prevention and resolution, it calls for the full, equal and meaningful participation of women in such processes. In addition, the resolution emphasizes the need to further promote a culture of peace in the context of the ongoing digital transformation, including addressing the underlying causes of violence and conflict.

Ambassador Muhith said that the relevance of the resolution has multiplied over time, thereby giving the concept of 'Culture of Peace' a larger footprint in the main functions of the United Nations and becoming an impactful resolution. He further said, 'In the context of rapidly changing global security, it has proved to be an effective tool which is also playing a role in complementing the responsibility of the United Nations Charter to maintain world peace.

This year, more than 100 countries have co-sponsored the resolution in Bangladesh, which is a massive support to advance the concept of 'culture of peace'. The continued support for the resolution and its unanimous adoption every year is testimony to the great confidence of the international community in Bangladesh as a champion of peace.
