Kabul: Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani has accepted US President Donald Trump's invitation to visit the US, the ARG Presidential Palace confirmed on Friday.

"The U.S. president extended an invitation to President Ghani to visit the White House, which the president accepted," the official Twitter page of the ARG Presidential Palace tweeted.

Palace spokesman Sediqqi said Ghani and Trump had a telephonic conversation on Thursday when the two leaders had a detailed discussion about the peace process and the important progress the Afghan security forces have made in the battlefield.

"Pres. Trump thanked Pres. Ghani for his efforts and support in ensuring the release of the two American University professors from the Taliban’s captivity. The two leaders also praised the efforts of Afghan security forces in defeating the Daesh in Nangarhar province," he tweeted.

"The two leaders discussed the Afghan government’s 7-point peace plan. In response, President Trump insisted on a ceasefire as a precondition before negotiations," he said.

The two released Western hostages were identified as American Kevin King and Australian Timothy Weeks.

They were kidnapped three years ago outside the American University of Afghanistan in Kabul where they worked as professors.
