BCCI slams 258 Cr damage charges on WI cricket board

Mumbai, Nov 1: Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has slapped damage charges to the tune of over 250 crores on West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) after the latter pulled out of bilateral series against India mid-way last month owing to the stalemate in contracts between the Players’ association and the Windies’ cricket board, media reported.

According to reports, The WICB will have to shell out nearly $42 million (INR 258 crores) in order to prevent a lawsuit from a fuming BCCI, after the abandoned tour of India last month.

It has been learnt that BCCI officials gave the West Indies board 15 days to come up with a plan of compensation.

Media quoted BCCI letter as saying: “In the event the BCCI does not receive such a proposal in acceptable terms, within a period of 15 days from receipt of this letter, please note that the BCCI has peremptorily instructed its attorneys to initiate steps for recovery of the losses by filing appropriate legal proceedings against the WICB in the appropriate Indian court and you may treat this notice as a formal demand in that regard.”

It has been learnt that the letter was signed by BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel to WICB president Dave Cameron.

The BCCI has also reportedly informed the WICB it was formally suspending all bilateral relations until the legal issues were resolved.

Reports stated, BCCI\'s damages claim could bring the bankrupt West Indies Cricket Board (WICB), which is going through its worst internal crisis, due to players’ contract disagreement.

The Windies players were protesting new playing contracts which they argued would have resulted in up to a 75 percent reduction in their earnings.

The players cancelled the bilateral series with India mid-way after playing four ODIs.

The visitors were scheduled to play one more ODI, a one-off T20 match followed by three Tests.

It has been learnt that BCCI sent a copy of the claim to cricket’s parent body, International Cricket Council (ICC).

Media reported this has been done keeping in mind that in case WICB fails to compensate, then chances are that the WICB\'s share of ICC revenue will go to BCCI.
