Dhaka, January 6: In the by-election of Gaibandha-5 (Saghata-Phulchari) constituency, Awami League nominated boat candidate Mahmud Hasan Ripon was elected privately by getting 78 thousand 285 votes. His nearest candidate Ghulam Shahid Ranju of Jatiya Party (JPA) got 44 thousand 752 votes.
Calling off Gaibandha polls not a rash decision: CEC
Dhaka, October 13: Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal said that stopping the by-election of Gaibandha-5 (Phulchari-Saghata) constituency was not a rash decision. The Election Commission has taken a decision after thinking. Elections have been closed under close observation.
