With the recent arrest of Dr Shafiqur Rahman, the chief of Jamaat-e-Islami, by the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Bangladesh over his suspected links with extremism, the focus on Jamaat-e-Islami, the largest Islamic political party in Bangladesh (now banned) has again been brought to the fore. However, it would be more appropriate to say that Jamaat is rather an extremist group in the garb of a political party that harbours the dream of converting People's Republic of Bangladesh into an Islamic state run on sharia laws with ulterior motives.

Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Shafiqur Rahman arrested

Dhaka, December 14: Jamaat-e-Islami Amir doctor Shafiqur Rahman was arrested from his residence in Bashundhara residential area of the capital by the CTTC unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media) Farooq Hossain gave this information on Tuesday (December 13) around 11 am.

Jamaat Amir's son Rafat and one other placed on remand

Dhaka, November 14: In the case of Jatrabari police station of the capital, the court has granted remand for two more days to two people, including Rafat Sadiq Saifullah, son of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Amir Dr. Md. Shafiqur Rahman. The other accused in this case is Arif Fahim Siddiqui.
