Sheikh Hasina PM Sheikh Hasina stresses on expanding business among Commonwealth nations
Dhaka, 12 June 2023 : Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today emphasized on strengthening business for socio-economic development of Commonwealth countries.
When a delegation led by Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC) Deputy Chairman Lord Hugo George William Sweyer went to meet the Prime Minister at his official residence Ganobhaban on Sunday evening, he said that Commonwealth countries should strengthen trade among themselves for socio-economic development.
Apart from the Commonwealth countries, Sheikh Hasina also emphasized on developing strong trade ties with non-Commonwealth countries, especially oil-rich Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia and Qatar.
Prime Minister's speech writer Nazrul Islam quoted her as saying that the Prime Minister has been informed about the first 'Commonwealth Trade and Investment Forum' to be held in Dhaka on September 13-14.
CWEIC will organize this forum to increase trade and investment between Commonwealth countries including Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister welcomed CWEIC for organizing the forum event.
In the meeting, Sheikh Hasina recalled the role of the Commonwealth and said that the Commonwealth had pressured the then-caretaker government in 2007 to allow her to return home.
The caretaker government imposed a ban on his return to Bangladesh.
Other members of the delegation are CWEIC Director of Operations Daniel Sean Leno, Strategic Advisor Zillur Hossain MBE and Technical Partner Shahinuzzaman. At that time, Prime Minister's Advisor on Private Industry and Investment Salman Fazlur Rahman and Secretary of the Prime Minister's Office Mohammad Salahuddin were present.
