Veteran singer Sandhya Mukhopadhyay is no more: Bangladesh PM, President offer condolences

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, February 16: A time-honoured singing legend of Indian Bengali music, Sandhya Mukherjee, passed away at a hospital in Kolkata on Tuesday evening. She was 90.

The veteran singer fell ill on the evening of January 26. According to hospital sources, she had a lung infection. The legendary singer had been in ICU for the last few days due to deteriorated health conditions.

The singer had been suffering from an age-related illness for some time. She also fell at her home and got her knee fractured. The artist was then taken to SSKM Hospital in Kolkata. Her Covid-19 report was positive and she was shifted to Apollo Hospital in the city's EM Bypass area.

President Md. Abdul Hamid expressed deep grief over the death of this veteran artist of Bengali music. In a condolence message, the President said that the death of Sandhya Mukhopadhyay was an irreparable loss to the music world of the subcontinent.

The people of this country will forever remember her contribution in the liberation war of Bangladesh with respect.

He wished peace to the departed soul of Sandhya Mukhopadhyay and conveyed deep condolences to her bereaved family.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in another condolence message has expressed deep grief and sorrow over the death of Sandhya Mukhopadhyay. She said that besides spreading the fascination of music in the subcontinent, the contribution of Sandhya Mukhopadhyay in the great liberation war will be memorable.
