Extreme poverty rate in Bangladesh reduced in 2022: BBS

Dhaka, Dec 28: The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) has reported that the extreme poverty rate has decreased significantly in 2022.

These data have come out in the final report of Household Income-Expenditure Survey-2022 of Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS). This information was informed in the final report of the 'Household Income and Expenditure Survey (HIES) 2022' at the BBS conference room in Agargaon of the capital on Wednesday.

It is said that the poverty rate at the national level stands at 18.7 percent. Out of this, there is 20.5 percent poverty in rural areas and 14.7 percent poverty in urban areas. Whereas in 2016, poverty at the national level was 24.3 percent. 26.4 percent in rural areas and 18.9 percent in urban areas. In addition, the rate of extreme poverty has decreased significantly in 2022. Using the lower poverty line, the extreme poverty rate in 2022 is 5.6 percent at the national level, 6.5 percent in rural areas, and 3.8 percent in urban areas. Whereas in 2016, using the lower poverty line, extreme poverty was 12.9 percent at the national level, 14.9 percent in rural areas and 7.6 percent in urban areas. Extreme poverty in HIES 2016 using the back-calculation method was 9.3 percent (low poverty line). So it can be seen that the rate of extreme poverty in Bangladesh has decreased drastically from 2016 to 2022.

Planning Minister MA Mannan participated in the event virtually. Project Director Mohiuddin Ahmed presented the main report. Barisal division has the highest poverty rate in 2022. Earlier, Kurigram had the highest poverty rate, but now it has gone to Barisal. As calculated by both high and low poverty lines, poverty in Barisal division in 2022 is the highest among the divisions.
