Dhaka, March 26: Today is the Great Independence and National Day. On the night of March 25, 1971, the Pakistani military launched a sudden genocidal campaign against Bengalis called 'Operation Searchlight' and arrested Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the undisputed leader of the Bengali nation.

President, PM cut cake on Independence Day

Dhaka, March 27: President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina cut a cake on the occasion of Independence and National Day. The cake was cut at the state reception on the occasion of the great independence and national day celebrations at Bangabhaban on Sunday.

Prime Minister joins President's reception at Bangabhaban

Dhaka, March 27: On the occasion of the 53rd Independence and National Day, a special prayer was held to wish the country continued peace, progress and prosperity at the reception organized at Bangabhaban. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina attended the reception at Bangabhaban lawn around 5 pm on Sunday. President Md. Abdul Hamid and his wife Rashida Hamid organized the event.

On this day in 1971, a new nation called Bangladesh appeared on the world map with Bangabandhu's declaration of independence.
