Great Independence and National Day celebrated

Dhaka, March 27: The Great Independence and National Day was celebrated across the country including the capital Dhaka on Sunday by paying deep respect to the memory of the martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the great liberation war. On this day in 1971, a new nation called Bangladesh appeared on the world map with Bangabandhu's declaration of independence.

On the occasion of celebrating the Great Independence and National Day with due dignity, programmes were held at the national level. On Sunday morning, the day started with thirty-one gunshots in the capital.

President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid their respects at Savar National Memorial on Sunday morning on the occasion of Independence Day. At that time, Speaker of Jatiya Sangsad Dr. Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique, senior leaders of Awami League and senior civil and military officials were present.

The main gate of the National Memorial was thrown open to the public immediately after the state ceremony. As soon as the main gate of the National Memorial was opened, people thronged the memorial to pay their respects to the best sons of the nation. Meanwhile, leaders of the National Party, BNP, Bangladesh Workers Party, JSD and other political parties paid floral tributes at the main altar of the National Memorial.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina paid tribute to the portrait of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu kept in front of Bangabandhu Bhaban at Dhanmondi number 32 after returning from Savar National Memorial. After that, Sheikh Hasina as the party chief paid tribute to the portrait of Bangabandhu along with the leaders of the central committee of the Awami League. In the morning, like every year, the Prime Minister sent flowers, fruits and sweets to the family members of the freedom fighters at the rehabilitation center for martyred families and war injured freedom fighters in Mohammadpur on Independence and National Day.

On the occasion of Great Independence Day, prayers and Milad Mahfil were organized in all mosques of the country including Baad Zohar Baitul Mukarram National Mosque as part of special prayer program in all religious institutions including mosques, temples, pagodas, churches.
