Dhaka, March 11: Bangladesh wants to buy 10 more locomotives from the United States. Railways Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujan expressed interest in meeting US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl Robert Miller at the Rail Bhaban on Wednesday (March 10th). 

According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Railways, during the discussion, the Minister of Railways mentioned 40 broad gauge locomotives made in the United States.

He said 40 locomotives will come in five lots. Eight of the first lot have already arrived in Bangladesh. In addition, the 100 locomotives that Hyundai Rotem of South Korea will supply to Bangladesh will also be supplied by the same American company 'Progress Rail'.

Ten more locomotives were discussed to be purchased from Progress Rail at the same price. The US delegation expressed positive interest in the matter, the press release said.

The Railway Minister requested that arrangements be made to make skilled manpower for the operation of these locomotives as well as to make the equipment easily available.

He also called on the United States to consider how advanced technology can be integrated into the country's railways.

Highlighting the infrastructure problems of Bangladesh's railways at the time, the railway minister said it was very important to build a double line. The US business delegation could explore various areas of investment in railways in Bangladesh.

Nurul Islam Sujan sought the cooperation of the United States in the construction of the double line of the railway. He also called on the United States to come forward to build passenger coaches and locomotive factories in Bangladesh.
