Long-term contractual LNG purchase proposal approved

Dhaka, August 10: The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has approved in principle two proposals received from two separate companies for the purchase of LNG to meet the country's energy needs. The 15-year agreement will come into effect from 2026. This approval was given in this year's 17th meeting of CCEA held virtually under the chairmanship of Finance Minister HM Mustafa Kamal.

At the end of the meeting, Additional Secretary of the Council of Ministers Department Md. Amin Ul Ahsan said in a press briefing that a total of four proposals have been approved in today's meeting of CCEA.

According to two separate proposals by the Department of Energy and Mineral Resources, Petrobangla will purchase 1 to 1.5 MTPA of LNG from Maheshkhali-based Accelerate Energy Bangladesh Limited under a 15-year long-term arrangement starting from 2026, he said.

Md Amin Ul said, under another long-term agreement of 15 years, Petrobangla will purchase 1.5 MTPA of LNG from Summit Oil and Shipping Company Limited from 2026.

He said that according to another proposal of the Power Department, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) for Ghorashal 3rd Unit Repower Combined Cycle Power Plant from General Electric (Switzerland) GmbH, the main producer company, under direct purchase method (DPM) regarding repair of damaged gas turbine compressor. Services will collect. Besides, in today's CCEA meeting, in-principle approval was given to a proposal of the Ministry of Housing and Public Works to implement 'Construction, Operation and Maintenance of Water Treatment Plant in Purbachal New Town' under Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) system. Rajuk will implement this project to build a sustainable and eco-friendly sewage system in the Purbachal New Town project.
