Malaysian labor market at stalemate due to recruitment agency issue

Dhaka, March 19: The ministers of the two countries (Bangladesh and Malaysia) are adamant about their positions on the issue of labor market in Malaysia. Due to this position of the two countries, the people concerned are worried about when the door of sending workers will be opened.

According to the relevant ministries and international recruiting agencies of the two countries, the Malaysian authorities want to recruit Bangladeshi migrants through a limited number of Bangladeshi recruiting agents (BRA). However, the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment in Bangladesh wants to allow all legal entities to send workers. Due to this separate policy of the two countries, the process of recruitment of workers from Bangladesh in Malaysia is still suspended.

Malaysia is saying that not all recruiting agencies can be dumped with responsibility. And on behalf of Bangladesh, it is being said that we are neither for nor against the syndicate, in favor of sending workers. At the same time, Bangladesh wants to ensure dignified immigration of foreign job seekers in Malaysia.

The two countries signed a memorandum of understanding on December 19 to send Bangladeshi workers to Malaysia. In a letter dated January 14 this year, Malaysia's Human Resources Minister M Saravanan said the labor market would not be open to all recruiting agencies in Bangladesh. Through 25 recruiting agencies, another 250 agencies will be able to send staff to Malaysia as collaborators.

Bangladesh's Minister for Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment Imran Ahmed sent a counter letter on January 18 objecting to the proposal. One month later, on 18 February, another letter was sent through the Bangladesh High Commission in Kuala Lumpur to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Human Resources of Malaysia. The letter called for the addition of an automated digital system to select recruiting agency numbers and an online system for both countries. The letter requested for a joint technical committee meeting. However, Malaysia has not given any official response.
