World Bank will provide USD 700 million dollars assistance: Foreign Minister

Own correspondent, Dhaka, 24 January 2024: Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud said that the World Bank will provide USD 700 million in aid to the Rohingya and refugee communities. Of this, USD 315 million is for the Rohingya, and the remaining USD 385 million is a soft loan for the Rohingya and refugee communities.

The minister gave this information to reporters after a meeting with Abdoulaye Seck, country director of the World Bank appointed in Dhaka at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday.

The foreign minister said, "We had a meeting with the country director of the World Bank. He said that the World Bank will provide USD 700 million in aid to the Rohingya and refugee communities. The World Bank has talked about increasing relations. They want to increase their involvement with us. At the moment, the World Bank has invested 15 billion dollars in 56 projects in Bangladesh. There is and the World Bank country director has said to expand activities with Bangladesh in the future."

When asked about the killing of a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) member at the border, he said, "I am not aware yet. I will be informed later."

Dr. Hasan said, "There have been talks about land leases for cotton, palm oil cultivation in Uganda. Soon a commercial team can go to the country. There have been talks about investing in agriculture in African countries."

The foreign minister returned home on Tuesday after leading the Bangladesh delegation to the 19th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Uganda and the 3rd South Summit of the Group of 77 nations and China.
