Revised policies of Hefazat

After Maulana Bhasani’s historical Long March, the Hefazat-e-Islam leaders recently organized the second Long March in Bangladesh. Hefazat-e-Islam was formed on January 19, 2010 as a non-political organization to educate the Muslims about Islam’s Iman, Aqeeda, tenets and ideals. The objective of this organization is to consolidate Islam in the society, promote Islamic values and counter all anti-Islam and anti-Muslim conspiracies, both within the country and abroad. Allama Shah Ahmad Shafi, esteemed Alem and Islamic scholar who is also Chairman of Qaumi Madrassa Board and Director of the famous Hathazari Madrassa, is the head of this organization.

Allama Shafi appealed to the people to rise in revolt against anti-Islam bloggers who were berating Islam and the prophet in the wake of formation of Ganojagoran Mancha. On getting positive response from the people, he announced 13-point programme and Hefazat’s Long March was a part of this programme.

A report headlined ‘Mirza Fakhrul meets Islamist radicals at Hotel Radisson – Hefazat Jamaat in secret telephonic talks’ has come out online and it has been noticed at “http:www.facebook.com/bangla. links.page”. It is clear from this report that there was a plan to unleash the destabilizing forces to create large scale anarchy and chaos under the cover of Long March in order to overthrow the government. A senior Jamaat leader held a secret meeting in the office of a newspaper in Dhaka. Those in attendance included a Hefazat leader, some family members of war crimes accused now facing trial and the Editor of the newspaper. Several plans to create large scale violence, anarchy and lawlessness while conducting the Long March came up for discussion at the meeting. Discussions centered around the following. It was mentioned that some youths would be killed by the Jamaat cadres who would also set some madrassas on fire. Some cadres under the guise of atheists would set the holy Quran on fire to instigate the masses. Some would torch Hindu temples and may kill one or two war crimes accused. It was decided in course of the meeting that Tk 50 crore would be given for the Hefazat

movement and remaining portion would be available with the leaders of radical Islamist groups that are also constituents of 18-Party Alliance. At this meeting one more demand was added to the list of Hefazat’s main demands. This was the demand for release of all Jamaat-Shibir leaders and workers arrested during the ongoing violent movement launched by them. Hefazat leaders have however denied any links with Jamaat-Shibir and said that their movement was totally non-political.

If all demands of Hefazat are to be acceded there would be a complete overhaul in the society - no western education, no co-education, no mingling of men and women and no sculpture. It seems that even Hefazat leaders have no clear idea about the system that they envision for the country.

Esteemed Allama Shafi, the people of the country know that your organization Hefazat-e-Islam was founded to uphold Islamic ideals and principles and promote Islamic values in the society and it has absolutely no political agenda. Now how can your organization be a part of Jamaat-Shibir’s conspiracies and support the violence unleashed by Jamaat-Shibir cadres to create large scale chaos and anarchy in the country to scuttle the war crimes trial? Although Hefazat claims to be a non-political organization, how can it demand release of the war criminals?
