Sinha’s appeal for unity of Hindus

Interacting with the devotees who assembled at the temple, he underscored the need for unity among the Hindus. He exhorted them to remain united to face the challenges that confront them in day-to-day life. On one occasion he said that Awami League government has appointmed him as the first Chief Justice of Supreme Court of Bangladesh from minority community.

{special_block_1}Earlier, during his one-month leave on health grounds in October, 2017, while visiting Dhakeshwari temple in Dhaka on the occasion of Luxmi Puja, Sinha interacted with persons who assembled there including Rana Dasgupta, General Secretary of Hindu Bouddha Christian Oikya Parishad and senior lawyer of Supreme Court Subrata Chowdhury.

Talking to the devotees Sinha expressed the view that the Awami League remains the best option for them despite some mistakes committed by the party. No one else will be a better friend to them, he observed. Reminding them the tortures they suffered after the 2001 elections he urged them to rally behind Awami League in election, adding it will not at all be wise to consider pro-Pak elements as an option in this regard.{special_block_2}

As Chief Justice, Sinha has given several key judgments including one that declared Gen Ziaur Rahman’s military rule unconstitutional. Having had an illustrious career Sinha headed the Appellate Division Bench that heard the 13th amendment appeal of the constitution and scrapped the provision of Caretaker Government system. He was also part of the bench that heard the 2009 appeals in the landmark assassination case of the country’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Of late his judgments led to execution of a number of war criminals.

Sinha sent a letter of resignation to the President from abroad stepping down from the post of Chief Justice on November 11, 2017. Law Minister Anisul Haq said the Chief Justice had taken leave on medical grounds and went abroad from where he tendered resignation. Refuting allegations being raised by BNP to derive political advantage out of Sinha’s resignation, the Law Minister said Sinha is held in high esteem for his sincerity and wisdom and denied that the government had put any pressure on him to resign.
