Sheikh Hasina's return was essential for Bangladesh: ADB

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 17 January 2024: Asian Development Bank Country Director Edimon Ginting said that the return of Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister was very important for the bright future of Bangladesh. Quoting ADB Country Director, Prime Minister's Deputy Press Secretary KM Shakhawat Moon told reporters, "Her (Sheikh Hasina) return was very necessary for the bright future of Bangladesh". He said this during a meeting at Ganabhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister today.

Shakhawat Moon said that ADB's country director congratulated the Prime Minister on being elected as Prime Minister for the fourth time in a row. "ADB is very happy," he told the Prime Minister.

Ginting mentioned that ADB has been working as a development partner of Bangladesh for a long time. He said, 'We are ready to work together in the coming days as well. We are always ready to work with Bangladesh. He expressed interest in working with Bangladesh on energy sector and climate change issues. ADB Country Director also said that they want to expand their activities in Cox's Bazar climate rehabilitation project.

The Prime Minister requested them to do the same in the hill districts also. He mentioned the need for ADB's continued support for Bangladesh and said, "I hope you will continue your support." Sheikh Hasina thanked ADB for continuously supporting Bangladesh in its development efforts to undertake value addition projects in priority sectors. He also thanked ADB for reaching the maximum commitment of USD 3.6 billion in the last year.

Currently, ADB is financing 61 projects across 7 (seven) major sectors of the Bangladesh economy. These include transport, water and urban infrastructure and services, energy, human and social development, agriculture, food, natural and rural development, finance, public sector management and governance. . Sheikh Hasina requested ADB to take up projects to meet the needs of Bangladesh's economic graduation challenges, where improvement of logistics infrastructure and service delivery should be given top priority.
