Dhaka, August 24: Outgoing World Bank Country Director Mercy Miyang Tembon praised the overall socio-economic development of Bangladesh, including the empowerment of women, under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. She expressed this appreciation during the farewell meeting at Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's official residence Ganabhaban on Wednesday.

After the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the journalists. The World Bank country director said that she has visited various places in Bangladesh and was impressed by its grassroots development.

Citing the example of a village in Comilla, Tembon said she was happy to see small houses where every family had planted trees and cultivated vegetables in their house premises. She applauded the Prime Minister for her Asharyan scheme.

In this context, the Prime Minister said that both the husband and wife are the owners of the houses under the project and they are using their land for vegetable cultivation.

Tembon said she was very happy to see students and others involved in paddy harvesting to help farmers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Prime Minister said in this context that the leaders and activists of his party Bangladesh Awami League and its affiliated organizations have done this out of their political commitment. Regarding women's development, Sheikh Hasina said that the task was not so easy and for this her government had to face many difficulties.

Mentioning that Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman laid the foundation for women's development in this country, she said that his government is following Bangabandhu's footsteps and implementing various initiatives to ensure equal rights for women. She also said that the presence of women in all fields including sports and employment has been ensured by removing obstacles to women's progress.
