India's Mizoram state interested in operating another border market

Dhaka, March 8: The Indian state of Mizoram has expressed interest in launching another border hut with Bangladesh. Anup Dhawan, Secretary, Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry, India, held a meeting with the Commerce Minister at noon on Sunday (March 7) in the office of the Commerce Minister at the Secretariat. Commerce Minister Tipu Munshi said this at a press conference after the meeting. 

He said, "Ongoing border markets have created a lot of interest among the people of both the countries. Initiatives have been taken to increase the number of border markets. A few more border markets will be opened soon."

"I was called by a state minister from Mizoram last week. They also want a market to be set up on the border of Mizoram and on our border. A delegation from Mizoram will come to Bangladesh this month to discuss the issue," the minister said.

At present there are three border markets in operation between Bangladesh and India, where locals are selling their goods. Mizoram shares borders with Bandarban and Rangamati in Bangladesh.

The delegation, led by the Commerce Secretary of India, included Indian High Commissioner to Dhaka Vikram Doraiswami. Also present at the time were Additional Secretary (FTA) of the Ministry of Commerce Md. Mohidul Islam, Director General (Additional Secretary) of the WTO Cell Md. Hafizur Rahman.
