Dhaka, July 29: All types of ferry services on the Shimulia-Banglabazar route have been suspended due to turbulent Padma River. All types of ferry services have been suspended from 12 noon on Thursday (July 29), BIWTC's Shimulia Ghat Assistant Manager (Commerce) Faisal Ahmed said.

He said ferry traffic would be suspended as long as the river remained rough due to the wind. He also said that 100 to 150 vehicles are waiting to cross the wharf as the ferry is closed.

Earlier on Thursday morning, there was a crowd of passengers and private vehicles on the Shimulia-Banglabazar route. Hundreds of working people from the south have returned to Dhaka as in the past few days, ignoring the restrictions announced by the government to prevent corona infection. At that time, the passengers crossing the ferry were not seen to be following the hygiene rules.

According to the report, the ferry service has become risky due to the strong waves on the long route of the middle Padma in hostile weather. For this reason, the authorities have stopped the ferry service from Banglabazar to Shimulia route to avoid the accident. The ferry service has been suspended from 12 noon on Thursday (July 29). Earlier, four row-row and two K-type ferries ply the route from dawn.

Meanwhile, at least five hundred vehicles including goods trucks and covered vans are stuck at the Banglabazar ferry terminal in Shibchar.

This information has been known from the Banglabazar ferry terminal of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC). The river Padma has become turbulent due to drizzle and strong winds at the same time.

Md. Jamil Hossain, co-manager of BIWTC's Banglabazar ferry terminal, said the ferry service has been suspended from 12:30 pm to avoid any risk. The ferry will remain closed until further notice.
