1.5 cr Bangladeshis are working in 176 countries: PM

Dhaka, July 6: About 1.5 crore Bangladeshis are working in 176 countries of the world. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said this in reply to Afzal Hossain, Member of Parliament for Kishoreganj-5 Constituency in the question and answer session of the Jatiya Sangsad on Wednesday.

She said that the government is working tirelessly to ensure orderly, safe and responsible labour migration. Currently, more than 1 crore 49 lakh workers are working in 176 countries in the world.

The Prime Minister also said that after the current government assumed power, foreign employment of 81 lakh 47 thousand 642 people in professional, skilled, semi-skilled and low-skilled categories has been confirmed.

She said, as a result of providing necessary training to women workers, selection of trainees and orientation activities at the district level and decentralization, about one million women workers have got employment opportunities abroad.

In reply to the question of Member of Parliament of Chittagong-11 Constituency M. Abdul Latif, the Prime Minister said that 473 species of fish have been identified in the Bay of Bengal by research conducted by the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute. Among them, 11 are new species. Scientists of the institute have so far identified 154 species of seaweeds in the Bangladesh sea coast, of which 27 are commercially important. Six species of seaweed cultivation methods have been developed through research.
