12 types of vaccines will be produced in Gopalganj

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, Sept 30: Twelve types of vaccines, including Covid-19 vaccine, will be produced in the vaccine manufacturing and research plant under construction in Gopalganj. Besides meeting the needs of the country, these vaccines will be exported abroad.

This information was obtained from the proceedings of the meeting of the parliamentary committee on the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of the National Parliament held on Thursday (September 29) at the Parliament Building.

It is learned that in the previous meeting of the parliamentary committee, it was recommended to start the production of vaccines by setting up a vaccine manufacturing and research plant in the current financial year (2022-23).

A progress report on the recommendations was given in Thursday's meeting. It is informed that Tk 28 crore 67 lakh 26 thousand 790 has been estimated for the acquisition of land for setting up the vaccine plant. Steps have been taken to pay this amount from the own funds of Essential Drugs Ltd. (UDCL). A consultancy firm has been appointed for the formulation of DPP for setting up of vaccine plant. Asian Development Bank (ADB) has agreed to finance the project. Their representatives visited the project area on September 23 and conveyed their consent.

The report also says that a consultant has been officially appointed to carry out all the work related to raw materials, technology transfer, and scientific affairs for the production of 12 types of vaccines including the corona vaccine. In addition, initiatives have been taken to formulate Medicines Act 2022 to raise the maturity label of the Drug Regulatory Authority to 3 for vaccines manufactured in Bangladesh for export abroad.

In Thursday's meeting, it was recommended to quickly implement the vaccine manufacturing and research plant in Gopalganj, according to the press release of the Parliament Secretariat.

In the meeting, instructions were given to provide opportunities for research participation to public and private medical professors/associate professors/assistant professors in various research programmes for the purpose of promoting higher education in the medical field in the country.

Chairman of the committee Sheikh Fazlul Karim Salim chaired the meeting and committee members AFM Ruhul Haque, Muhibur Rahman Manik, Md. Abdul Aziz, Syeda Zakia Noor and Md. Amirul Alam Milan participated in the meeting.
