Dhaka, March 30: Speakers at a discussion meeting organized by the 14 central parties said that if Hefazat-e-Islam could not be suppressed, a terrible situation would arise.

"We must go against them with all our might," the speakers said this at a virtual discussion meeting organized by 14 central parties on Monday on the occasion of the golden jubilee of independence.

The meeting was chaired by Amir Hossain Amu, a member of the Awami League's advisory council and coordinator of the 14-party central committee.

He said, "Bangabandhu was able to rebuild in three and a half years. He also gave instructions on how the country would function in the coming days. If we follow Bangabandhu's goals and objectives, the things that are coming before us are not supposed to come. They will not come in the future."

Amir Hossain Amu said, "They had no choice but to chant the slogan of bigotry against the development of the country. But this is not an isolated incident. They resort to communalism whenever they get a chance. They repeatedly seek refuge in communalism and attack the country. Be it Hefazat of pro-Pakistan Jamaat-e-Islami, they are not an isolated force."

Addressing the government, he said there is no time to underestimate them. They must be suppressed with a firm hand. Government laws must be strictly enforced on them.

Awami League Advisory Council member Tofail Ahmed said, "Most of the people in custody are Jamaat members. Who was Mamunul Haque's father? Who are the others? The goal can never be achieved by compromise. What has started in politics today is ominous. No matter how much we try to please them, they will not deviate from their political philosophy. They will stay where they are. There is no chance to make them happy. Everyone must work together to reach the goal of politics."

Workers Party president Rashed Khan Menon said, "Those who sought the demolition of Bangabandhu's sculpture are still in power. They will not allow the golden jubilee of independence to be celebrated without any hindrance. Such a big event happened, it reminds us of the Taliban of the past."
