Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 9 August 2023: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has declared 123 more upazilas and 12 districts completely homeless and landless. The Prime Minister announced this by handing over houses to 22 thousand 101 homeless and landless families in different upazilas of the country on Wednesday (August 9) through a video conference from Ganabhaban.

12 more districts have been freed from homeless and landless through the transfer of 22 thousand 101 houses under Asharyan-2 project. Another 123 upazilas of 41 districts were declared homeless and landless. As a result, the total number of upazilas is 334 and including these 12 districts, the total number of completely homeless and landless districts stands at 21. The total number of houses under Asharyan-II scheme stands at 2,38,851.

In the morning, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina attended a virtual ceremony in three upazilas from her official residence Ganabhaban and handed over land along with houses to the beneficiaries. The Prime Minister directly interacted with the beneficiaries of the Barasat Sonar Bangla Palli Asharyan Project in Terkhada Upazila of Khulna District, Chakla Asharyan-2 Project in Bara Upazila of Pabna and Amanullahpur Asharyan Project in Begumganj of Noakhali. Under the scheme, the landless and homeless have got good quality tin shed semi-furnished houses on 2.2 percent land.

12 districts free from landless and homeless are-

He declared Manikganj, Rajbari, Mymensingh, Sherpur, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon, Naogaon, Natore, Pabna, Kushtia, Pirojpur and Jhalkathi as homeless and landless free districts. Earlier she declared nine other districts including Panchagarh and Magura landless and homeless free districts.

Following in the footsteps of Bangabandhu, his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took the initiative to give ownership of houses and land to the homeless and landless through the Asryan scheme in 1997. A total of 8 lakh 29 thousand 607 families have been rehabilitated since 1997 under Asharyan project. The number of resettled people is 41 lakh 48 thousand 35 people (approximately as five persons in a family). The shelter project of the Prime Minister's office has so far directly rehabilitated 5 lakh 55 thousand 617 families and 2 lakh 73 thousand 990 families have been rehabilitated under various programs of the relevant government departments including the Ministry of Lands, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief and Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.
