4 killed in Chittagong landslide

Dhaka, June 18: Four people were killed and seven others were injured in a landslide in Akbar Shah Thana area of Chittagong city. The accident took place at around 1:00 am on Saturday in Barisal Ghona of Akbar Shah Police Station and at around 3:00 am in Vijay Nagar area of Fay's Lake.

Confirming the matter, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Akbar Shah Police Station Wali Uddin Akbar said the landslide took place in Barisal Ghona area of Lake No. 1 around 1:00 am on Saturday. Upon receiving the news, a team of fire service went to the spot and rescued five persons in critical condition and sent them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The doctors of the emergency department declared the two dead.

The deceased have been identified as Shahinur Akhter, 26, and Mainul Akhter, 24.

On the other hand, Assistant Director of Chittagong Fire Service Faruk Hossain Sikder told BSS that at around 3:00 am, members of the fire service rushed to the spot and rescued six people after receiving a report of a landslide in Vijay Nagar area of Fay's Lake in Akbarshah police station. Two of them, Liton (23) and Emon (14), died on the spot. Others were rushed to CMC Hospital.

Inspector (Investigation) of Panchlaish Police Station Sadiqur Rahman, supervising officer of Chamek Hospital police outpost, said that nine people were brought to Chamek Hospital from Barisal Ghona of Akbar Shah Police Station and Vijay Nagar area of Fay's Lake at around 3:00 am on Saturday night. Two were declared dead. The rest are undergoing treatment in different wards of the hospital. Their condition is also alarming.

Meanwhile, Patenga Meteorological Office forecasting officer Biswajit Chowdhury said that moderate to heavy rains may continue in different parts of Chittagong till June 20. After that, even if it decreases a little, it will rain intermittently throughout the month. The official also warned of landslides in Chittagong due to heavy rains.

The district administration has opened 18 shelters in four circles in Agrabad, Baklia, Kattli and Chandgaon after four people were killed in a landslide in Akbar Shah area of Chittagong metropolis.
