Dhaka, November 11: A Liberian flagged ship named Magnum Fortune with 52 thousand 500 tons of wheat from Ukraine has reached the outer anchorage of Chittagong port. After the start of the Russia-Ukraine war in February 2022, for the first time a food shipment from Ukraine reached Bangladesh.

Food Controller (Storage and Movement) Abdul Quader confirmed this information on Thursday (November 10) when the ship arrived with wheat on Wednesday (November 9) afternoon. Recently, the government tried to import wheat from India. As India did not agree, an agreement was signed to import wheat from Russia and Ukraine on G2G basis. As a part of which more than 100,000 tons of wheat has already arrived from Russia in two consignments.

In this regard, Abdul Quader said, on Thursday, we collected wheat samples from the ship that came from Ukraine. If everything is fine after the verification, the ship 'Magnum Fortune' will arrive at the specialized silo jetty for grain clearance. If the type and quality are as per the contract in the lab test, the redemption process will be started after completing the ancillary process.

Ukraine's food exports have come to a standstill after Russia imposed a naval blockade in the Black Sea off the coast of Ukraine after the war broke out last February. As a result, food crisis started to appear all over the world. Poorer countries, particularly those dependent on the Russia-Ukraine food trade, are the most vulnerable. In this, the price of food products started to increase. Later, through the mediation of Turkey, an agreement was reached with Russia-Ukraine to start the export of food from last August.

According to the report of Ukraine Agroconsult.com, on September 28, four ships with 115,000 tons of agricultural products for Africa, Asia and Europe left the ports of Chernomorsk and Yuzhny in Ukraine. Among them, the ship Magnum Fortune left for Chittagong port with 52 thousand 500 tons of wheat from Charnomrosk port.

Chittagong District Food Controller Abdul Quader said, "This is the first food ship from Ukraine after the war started. This wheat has been purchased on G2G basis in the last September under the government initiative. Earlier, on October 13, the 52 thousand ton wheat-carrying ship 'Silak-2' arrived at Chittagong port from Russia. After the Ukrainian ship, wheat shipments from Russia will also reach Chittagong."
