6 farmers killed in lightning strike while harvesting paddy in haor

Dhaka, April 24: Six farmers were killed in separate lightning strikes while harvesting paddy in Sunamganj's haor areas.

Among the deceased, three were from Chatak upazila, two from Doarabazar and one from Tahirpur upazila. These lightning strikes took place between 10 am and 11 pm on Sunday during paddy harvesting in haor.

The deceased have been identified as Mahim Mia (13) of Debergaon village of Jauabazar union in Chatak, Arsh Ali (60) of Barakapan village, Abdus Samad (45) of Chardurlabh village of Chramhalla union, Milan Mia (14) of A Rukhai village of Doarabazar upazila, Tara Mia (32) and Tahirpur, and Ramzan Ali (15) of Kukurkandi village of the upazila.

According to police and local sources, weather conditions were bad since Sunday morning. Everyone was busy harvesting paddy as there was ripe paddy in Howar. After 10 am, when rain and thunder started with gusty wind, the farmers in haor of three upazilas were killed in lightning strikes.

Superintendent of Police of Sunamganj Mohammad Ehsan Shah said that it has been raining since Sunday morning.

"I have received information that six people have died in three police stations areas. Instructions have been given to the OCs of all police stations to make the farmers aware," he said.
