6th population and housing census begins today

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 15: The sixth Population and Housing Census is starting today (Wednesday, June 15).

The week-long 'Population and Housing Census-2022' will end on June 21. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) will implement the population and household census. President Md. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have given separate messages on the occasion.

In his message, the President said it is the responsibility of all citizens living in Bangladesh to be included in the population and household census as a matter of national importance. He hoped that the 'Population and Housing Census-2022' will be successful and fruitful through the overall cooperation and spontaneous participation of all.

In her message, the Prime Minister said the UN-recognized population and household census is the most important national statistical programme conducted in all countries of the world including in Bangladesh.

Mentioning that the main goal is to achieve the highest welfare of the people by making Bangladesh the golden Bangladesh of the dream of the father of the nation, she hoped that the data obtained from 'Population and Housing Census-2022' would be equitable distribution of national resources, delimitation of constituencies, job creation, human resource development and quality education. It will play appropriate role in formulating and monitoring other plans including health and nutrition planning. So, the Prime Minister urged the people of the country to provide all kinds of assistance to the census workers in providing proper information and information collection activities.

Before the start of the census, Tuesday (June 14) at 12 o'clock in the night was set as the 'Census Reference Point / Time'. This was stated in a recent official information statement quoting the Statistics and Information Management Department of the Ministry of Planning.

This is the first time that the census has been conducted digitally. A web-based Integrated Census Management System (ICMS) has been developed and various maps of the geographical information system (GIS) have been prepared.

About 3,70,000 enumerators, 64,000 supervisors and more than 4,500 BBS employees across the country will be directly involved in the census data collection process. In addition, about 900 employees of various government departments outside the BBS will act as zonal officers.
