Own Correspondent, Dhaka, August 9: A young man named Ashiq Ali (25) set his motorcycle on fire in Rajshahi after he had been slapped with a case for violating traffic rules. The incident happened on Monday (August 8) around 1:30 pm in the court area of the metropolis. Ashiq's house is in Kanthalbaria area, the outskirts of the metropolis. His father's name is Asad Ali.

Local people said that Ashiq is a sand trader by profession. He bought a motorcycle six months ago. On Monday afternoon, Ashiq was riding the motorcycle with two others in the pillion. At that time, Ashiq and the pillion riders did not wear helmets.

Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) traffic division sergeant Abdul Qayyum stopped Ashiq's motorcycle at the Court Octroi More. At this time, the sergeant asked Ashiq to show the documents of the motorcycle. Besides, Sergeant Qayyum wanted to know why he was riding the bike with two pillion riders, and without helmets.

Then, Ashiq started arguing with Sergeant Qayyum. At one point, Ashiq set his motorcycle on fire. Later local people doused the fire with water. However, the motorcycle was completely burnt before the fire could be extinguished.

Locals also said that Ashiq's father Asad Ali came to the spot after learning about the incident. Later, Ashiq and his father were taken to the traffic office.

Sergeant Abdul Qayyum said Ashiq was carrying three people on a motorcycle in violation of traffic laws. None of them wore helmets. They were stopped for that.

Ashik even failed to show his motorcycle's documents. When preparations were underway to impound the bike with a case and take it to the traffic office, Ashiq got angry and opened the oil tank of the motorcycle and set it on fire.
