Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 11 August 2023: Police have detained nine people in connection with the robbery and attack on the Dhaka-bound Karnaphuli commuter train at Tongi Railway Junction in Gazipur. They were arrested from Tongi railway station area during a raid on Thursday.
Kamalapur Railway Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ferdous Ahmed Biswas confirmed the arrest at 11 am on Friday. The arrested are Mehdi Hasan Joy (26), Md Roni (35), Md Rabiul Hasan (40), Md Swadhin (30), Md Saiful Islam Zakir (25), Md Masood (27), Md Nasir ( 20), Md. Nayan Hasan (28) and Md. Ashiq (22).
OC Ferdous Ahmed Biswas said that at 10:30 pm, the robbery and attack took place on the Dhaka-bound Karnaphuli commuter train from Chittagong at the outer signal of Tongi Railway Junction (behind Akiz Bakers). A few passengers including TTE were injured. Railway police and Tongi East police station conducted a raid around Tongir railway station immediately after the incident of attack and robbery on the train passengers. At this time, nine people were arrested. A Chinese ax, 2 Swiss gear knives and some stolen mobile phones were recovered from them.
In-charge of Tongi Railway Outpost Chhotan Sharma said, the railway police arrested nine people by raiding various areas including Keranirtek Basti, Teestar Gate, Bank Ground Basti of Tongi overnight in connection with the robbery. The police officer said that the detainees are being interrogated at the Kamalapur police station in Dhaka.
Incidentally, the Dhaka-bound Karnaphuli commuter train that left Chittagong on Thursday slowed down while entering Tongi station. Just then miscreants started throwing stones at the train. At this time, panicked passengers started running for self-defense. Some slept on the floor of the train. Several people were also injured by stones. At this time, a steward of the train was hit with a knife.
In a video shared on social media Facebook on Thursday night, it can be seen that panicked passengers are running around in a hurry inside the train. At that time, the sound of stone pelting was heard from outside. Panicked passengers and children are seen crying.
