Awami League is always by the side of the people: PM

Own Correspondent, Dhaka, June 22: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that Awami League is always by the side of the people in any calamity.

She said, "Whether it is the government or the opposition, the leaders and workers of our party have always stood by the people and worked for them. We are always on the side of the people in cyclones, floods or any other disaster and we will continue to help the people."

The Prime Minister was addressing a meeting at Sylhet Circuit House on Tuesday to review the recent flood situation in Sylhet Division and rehabilitate the victims.

She said the Awami League reaches out to the affected people faster than others in any disaster. Above all, the Awami League will always work for the people.

Awami League President Sheikh Hasina expressed her gratitude to the local administration, the army and the leaders and workers of the Awami League and its affiliated organizations. Because, they are risking their lives to rescue the affected people and help in distributing relief.

She said the Awami League leaders and activists had moved to remote areas where many could not reach and had sent her pictures of the area which made the rescue process easier. "I sent that picture to the army chief, our office, divisional office. They have rescued people."

The Divisional Commissioner of Sylhet and the General Officer of Sylhet Cantonment gave a brief presentation on the flood and its damage.

According to the departmental administration, 33 upazilas of four districts have been affected where more than 45 lakh people have been submerged in the flood waters and more than 4.14 lakh people have taken shelter in 1285 shelters.

On the other hand, 74,000 hectares of land was submerged in the floods and 40,000 ponds and hatcheries were damaged in the flood waters causing an estimated loss of Tk 142 crore.
