Own Correspondent, Dhaka, 5 August 2023: The ruling Awami League has paid tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's eldest son, one of the organizers of the Liberation War and sports and cultural figure Shaheed Sheikh Kamal on the occasion of his 74th birth anniversary.

Awami League and allied organizations placed wreaths at the portrait of Shaheed Sheikh Kamal at the Abahani Club premises in Dhanmondi at 8 am on Saturday.

Later, at 9 am, tributes were paid to his grave at Banani Cemetery. Korankhani, Milad and Doa Mahfil were held there. Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Presidium member Matia Chowdhury, Mostafa Jalal Mohiuddin, Abdur Rahman, Shajahan Khan, Joint General Secretary Dr. Hashan Mahmud, AFM Bahauddin Nashim, Organizing Secretary were present there. Ahmed Hossain, SM Kamal Hossain, Advocate Afzal Hossain, Publicity and Publication Secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap, Science and Technology Secretary Engineer Abdus Sabur and leaders of Awami League and allied organizations. Various sports and socio-cultural organizations including Awami League have taken detailed programs on the occasion of the day.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of Sheikh Kamal's birthday, Dhaka Metropolitan South will organize a discussion meeting at the central office of Awami League on Bangabandhu Avenue at 11 am. Besides, Dhaka Metropolitan North and South Sramik League will organize a discussion meeting at 3 pm.

Sheikh Kamal was trained in the first war course of independent Bangladesh, got commissioned in the Liberation Army and served as ADC to General Osmani, the chief commander of the liberation war.

After independence, Sheikh Kamal was discharged from the army and concentrated on education. He was a member of the Bangladesh Chhatra League Central Executive and at the time of his martyrdom was a member of the Central Committee of the Jatiya Chhatra League, an organ of the Bangladesh Farmer Workers Awami League. He was a final stage candidate for MA in Social Science Department.

Sheikh Kamal was born on this day in 1949 in Tungipara village of Gopalganj subdivision. On the night of August 15, 1975, he was martyred at the age of 26 by a group of misguided army officers.
