Dhaka, July 24: The government had banned all types of fishing in the country's marine waters for 65 days from May 20. The ban was in force till July 23. The ban has been lifted after 12 midnight on Sunday.

Md. Iftekhar Hossain, the public relations officer of the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, said on Sunday that like last year, from May 20 to July 23, fishing of any species of fish is prohibited in Bangladesh's marine waters for a total of 65 days. The ban was lifted at 12 midnight on Sunday.

It is known that during the main breeding season of marine fish, the purpose of the 65-day fishing closure programme is to increase the fish resources by ensuring uninterrupted reproduction of fish. During this time, all commercial fishing trawlers were stopped from going to sea. Mechanized and artisanal fishing boats are moored at the wharf.

The local administration, navy, coast guard and armed forces assist in anti-fishing operations. In addition to jail and fine, there is provision for cancellation of registration and confiscation of net-trawlers if a fisherman goes to sea in violation of the ban. However, food assistance is provided to all seagoing registered fishermen who become unemployed during the closure of fishing.
