Bangladesh added to crucial UNESCO committee

Dhaka, June 6, 2021: Bangladesh has been elected for the first time to the International Committee of the 2005 Convention on Cultural Diversity of UNESCO.

Bangladesh was unanimously elected from the Asia and Pacific region for the term 2021-25. Earlier, the 7th General Assembly of the member states of the Virtual Convention was held on June 1-4.

The Foreign Ministry said in a press release on Saturday (June 5th) that 12 of the 24 member states were elected for the next four years in the June 4 elections in Paris. These countries are Bangladesh, France, Norway, Georgia, Serbia, Cuba, Jamaica, Vietnam, Burundi, Madagascar, United Arab Emirates and Palestine.

After being elected, Kazi Imtiaz Hossain, Ambassador of Bangladesh to France and Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to UNESCO, expressed his gratitude to all the member states of the 2005 Convention.

Meanwhile, UNESCO Assistant Director General for Culture Ernesto Renato Atoni thanked Bangladesh for coming forward to introduce the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Award.

The 'Bangladesh-UNESCO Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman International Award' for creative economy will be presented at the 41st General Meeting of UNESCO next November.

It is to be noted that the activities of the creative economic field in UNESCO are integrated through the 2005 Convention.
