Dhaka, October 16: Recognising the invaluable contribution of peacekeepers in protecting people from conflict and tackling unforeseen challenges such as epidemics, Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Bangladesh to the United Nations Rabab Fatima reiterated the issue of their safety and security.

She made the remarks while addressing a general debate of the fourth committee of the 75th General Assembly at the UN headquarters on Thursday.

Ambassador Fatima called for adequate security arrangements in this regard, specifying the existing risks and the challenges that peacekeepers are constantly facing, including unforeseen emergencies such as epidemics.

She praised the UN's "Adapt and Adjust" initiative to protect peacekeepers on the ground.

Ambassador Fatima stressed the need to further increase the deployment of women peacekeepers in higher positions in peacekeeping operations, including in the field, to ensure lasting peace and to promote 'peacekeeping operations' at a smooth pace.

The Permanent Representative of Bangladesh strongly condemned Israel's violation of the human rights of the Palestinian people, its transgression, and its continued violation of international law, including the Security Council resolution.

Ambassador Fatima reiterated her unwavering support for the Palestinian people's right to self-determination by establishing an independent Palestinian state under a two-state structure with East Jerusalem as its capital.

She expressed concern over the long-running funding crisis of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

Ambassador Fatima called on the member states to take the necessary steps to enhance the capacity of UNRWA by providing potential funding and technical assistance with greater generosity to address the issue.

Note that Bangladesh is regularly providing voluntary donations to UNRWA.

The Permanent Representative of Bangladesh expressed satisfaction over the continuation of the activities of the UN Special Political Missions in Covid-19.

However, she stressed the need for greater and stronger efforts by the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Myanmar to address the root causes of the atrocities against the displaced Rohingya and ensure the sustainable repatriation of Rohingya to their homeland.
