Bangladesh committed to implement SDG-3: Prime Minister

Dhaka, May 12: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has said that Bangladesh is committed to the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals including SDG-3 of the United Nations despite the challenges caused by the Covid pandemic, the Ukraine war and the global crisis.

The Prime Minister said this during a courtesy meeting with Helen Clark, former Prime Minister of New Zealand and co-chair of the Chatham House Commission, at a hotel in the capital on Thursday. After the meeting, Prime Minister's Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim briefed the journalists.

Sheikh Hasina said the government is working to implement the National Health Strategic Plan 2011-2030 to achieve the target. During the meeting, the Prime Minister informed Helen Clark about her government's steps to further develop the pharmaceutical industry.

Sheikh Hasina mentioned that the government has emphasized on conducting research, production of Covid-19 and other vaccines in the country and a vaccine manufacturing plant is being set up in Gopalganj with the technical assistance of the United States. In response, the former Prime Minister of New Zealand said that Bangladesh can be an exporter of special medicines including the Covid-19 vaccine.

Referring to her upcoming participation in the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) next September, Sheikh Hasina said she is looking forward to attending the high-level meeting in New York on universal health coverage and other issues of public interest.

At this time, Helen Clark said that Bangladesh under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina can play an important role in this regard.

Adviser on Mental Health and Autism to the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO) Saima Wazed, Minister of Health and Family Welfare Zahid Maleque, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Md. Shahriar Alam, Secretary to the Prime Minister's Office Mohammad Salahuddin, Foreign Secretary Masood Bin Momen and Health Secretary Dr. Md. Anwar Howladar were present.
