Dhaka, January 23: Bangladesh did not expect that Russia would send sanctioned vessel 'Ursa Major' with shipment for Rooppur nuclear power plant products. Foreign Minister Dr. AK Abdul Momen said this in response to journalists' questions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday (January 22). Such behaviour of Russia is surprising to the minister.

The Foreign Minister said that Russia has thousands of ships. We have told Russia that they can send any ship other than the sanctioned 69 ships. Above all, we do not want to accept ships that have sanctions.

Momen said, "It's surprising to me that Russia knowingly sent a sanctioned ship. We didn't expect it. But we hope, now Russia will send goods by ships that are not embargoed. We have a good relationship with America. In this situation, we cannot accept embargoed ships."

Later, when asked whether Russia has given any message about sending products of the Rooppur nuclear power plant, the Foreign Minister said, "We are working on this matter at the upper level."

When journalists asked the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Md. Shahriar Alam, whether there is going to be uncertainty about the shipment of Rooppur nuclear power plant products based on the return of the Russian ship, the state minister said, "It will be a little late. I can only say that the ship was not allowed to come to Bangladesh due to the ban."

Shahriar Alam said that there is talk of redemption in India. We had no such message. It is a commercial transaction. It is the supplier's responsibility to deliver to us and hopefully it will. Those who are in charge of implementing it will see to it.

Last December 24, the Russian flagged ship named 'Ursa Major' was supposed to arrive at Mongla port with the products of Rooppur nuclear power plant. Based on the information received from the United States, it is confirmed that a Russian ship which has changed its color and name and is on the list of embargoes is bringing the products of Rooppur nuclear power plant. Later, Bangladesh banned the ship from entering the port. However, Russia put pressure on Bangladesh to allow the ship to unload goods at the port. However, Bangladesh was adamant about not allowing the ship to enter the port. In this situation, the ship unloads the goods at any port in India and then tries to bring them to Bangladesh in another ship. But the ship failed after almost two weeks waiting for cargo to be unloaded in West Bengal, India.
